O. K. Nero!' Arrives at the Globe. The only thing to be said of "O. K. Nero!," the Italian- made comedy satire at the Globe, is that it was done much better in a 1. Eddie Cantor vehicle called "Roman Scandals." The word done, in fact, can hardly be applied at all to this facsimile of an old- time burlesque show, as stale, tasteless and dull a film as can be imagined. Produced by Niccolo Theodoli, with an English dialogue sound track tacked on by the American distributors, this sorry import squanders some lavish, heavily populated settings and such capable performers as Gino Cervi and the curvaceous Silvana Pampanini in a smirking account of how two American sailors play havoc with the glory that was Rome and, of course, Nero's. The excruciating mugging and bleating of these two "top bananas," Walter Chiari and Carlo Campanini by name, set the tone and pace of the whole Joe Miller enterprise. Martin and Lewis, supposedly their American counterparts, are Shakespearean in comparison. Nor are their soiled slapstick adventures, charted by six scenarists, any more compelling as these loud cornballs fall prey to backstairs court intrigue, a rebellion of gladiators and, of course, an abundance of scantily draped beauties. Obviously censored throughout, most of the tired gags still hold a self- conscious barrage of smutty innuendo. With the two heroes way out front. Mr. Cervi, as the Emperor; Miss Pampanini, as Poppea; Jackie Frost, Piero Palermini and all the others drool at each other and the camera. Director Mario Soldati should be drawn through a keyhole.
